Day 1 - The Journey Begins.... Santa Monica Pier to Rialto, California
We began our Route 66 Journey today at Santa Monica Pier. We will end up in Chicago sometime in June. There was a mist so the ocean was not visible. It took us 6 hours to drive 77 miles to Rialto, California.
It was awesome to see other people check out the corvette. One person pretended he owned the car and his friends took pictures of him.
If you look above Mikes head, in the background, you can see the End of the Trail sign.
Ian, is a dedicated Route 66 Traveler. He mans the booth on the pier and has a printed flyer with a map of Route 66 in LA with a list of the sites not to miss.
We stopped to see the Hollywood sign, ate lunch and took a few detours, back to Route 66.
We spent the night at the Wigwam Motel. Kumar, the proprietor, was very nice and gave us some tips on traveling Route 66. He said it is about the people you meet. Everyone has a story. In the Wigwam next to us were two couples from Australia. They had flown into Chicago and rented a car. After 20 days on the road, they will complete their journey tomorrow. The room itself was not luxury, but it took you back to a day where this was the best in luxury.
